Listening to Your Body for Greater Health

I was thinking back to the time in my life when I was at my thinnest to see what I could be doing differently now to restore that level of health and balance. The main thing I did was pay attention to what my body was telling me. If I was tired, I napped. Hungry - I ate. If I wasn’t hungry - well, I didn’t eat.

It all seems so simple when I outline it like that. But restoring that level of connectedness to my body is easier said than done. Today, I let myself have three of the things I craved:

  • Tuna fish - most likely for the protein
  • Cranberry juice - to help with water retention
  • Stinging nettle infusion - for water retention and to nourish my frazzled adrenals

See - there is a reason why my body needed the things I wanted to eat. I’ve been retaining a lot of water, I had just gone to the gym and lifted weights (thus, the protein craving), and my adrenal glands have been overtaxed due to an impending move.

The trick is to eliminate excess eating from my life. Some of the things I ate today, I didn’t necessarily want or need, like the chocolate chip cookies I had for dessert. That’s the kind of thing that needs to go.

So, I vowe to start listening again. What does my body want or not want? It is the listening that I believe will help put me back in balance.

Excellent post! When I was pregnant I craved just what my body needed.

Listening to our body’s cues for hunger is really important. Most overeaters don’t eat because they’re hungry. They eat for flavour and to fill a need like boredom or to find joy. Listening to our body’s cues is a very important factor in changing our lifestyles.

Cheers,

Oh, I love fish too! Tuna is really good, but salmon is my favorite - especially when it’s prepared with fresh herbs…. Yum-O!

Water retention is ick! Glad you’re working at getting rid of it. :-)

I’m not one for naps - just can’t seem to sleep during the day at all, but I have been making sure to get my nettle tea in every day. Love, love, love my nettles!

@ Dana - I still am working on getting in touch with letting my body tells me what it needs. There is a danger of misinterpreting. For example, do I crave the olives because I want the fat or the salt? So is it really a craving for olives?

@ Michele - Yes, water retention is quite ick. Judging by the time of the month I’m betting that my hormones are responsible.

My craving for nettles has passed and is replaced by oatstraw. Been under some stress with the move coming up!
